There are many excellent tutorials for REALbasic, many coming with the software and others available on the Internet (see Links). A tutorial mainly tells you, sep-by-step, how to get a certain result. These pages are different because they concentrate on why things are done and how the parts of an RB program fit together. This is not so often explained. A feature is the Flow Diagram. This site is different in another way - it is written by a beginner in REALbasic ("RB") strictly for beginners. Although a beginner writing about RB has the disadvantage of not knowing everything about the subject, he/she has the great advantage of knowing, sometimes painfully, what it is like to be a beginner, because he has been there very recently and in fact is still there. The problems of understanding faced by a beginner are fresh in his mind. These pages therefore record some of the more important things that I stumbled over or felt that I needed to understand in principle. Also, it is often useful for a beginner to get information from sources with different ways of explaining. This site avoids features that can be mainly ignored by a beginner or which can be gained from accessible sources, and it makes a few simplifications - it is never helpful to fill a beginner's head with more than can be used in the immediate future. This site is not a substitute for the manual which is very helpful. Any beginner is urged to read pages 21 and 29 to 43 (Version 5.5) to start off with, and then browse the rest. Links in the text are to definitions and explanations in the Links and Glossary page. Words with capital initials usually mean that the word has a particular meaning in RB. The version current when this site was written is 5.5.4 I have made the page size narrow to allow RB Projects to be open at the same time. I have a Mac and this site is oriented to that platform. Constructive comments and corrections from anyone (especially beginners) are welcome. | ||
