Timbering Details of the 1998 House
This shows the massive oak timbers used in timber-framed buildings. In the middle of the picture is a three-way joint. Note that all joints in timber-framed buildings are held together by wooden pegs, some of which can be seen here whilst some have not yet been inserted in their holes. These timbers will shrink acros the grain by up to 10% over the next 5 to 10 years (depending on the amount of central heating) and resulting gaps at the edges of the infill panels may need to be filled. See also the companion picture in the Picture Gallery showing the first floor.
